Eco's Philosophy of Appropriate Technology 

It is important for consumers--industrial, commercial, municipal, and residential--to understand the concept of "appropriate" technology. The technology required to waterproof a cement building is not the same as that required to protect a Boeing airplane or a nuclear submarine.

We can usually live with trade-offs in performance in order to reduce the hazardous substances in our environment.
